This UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the 7 Wonders of the World is a must-visit destination that promises an unforgettable adventure. From its intriguing history to essential travel tips, here’s everything you need to know before exploring the marvels of Petra.

Petra's Rich History and Significance

Visiting Petra in Jordan

Petra’s captivating past begins as the capital of the Nabataean Empire around the 1st century BC, where it flourished as a trading hub for frankincense, myrrh, and spices. Despite later annexation by the Roman Empire and a devastating earthquake in 363 AD that led to its decline, Petra remained a significant archaeological site. Rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johannes Burckhardt in 1812, this gem has since attracted travelers from all corners of the world.

Xplore Little Petra

A lesser-known attraction, Little Petra, also known as “As-Siq Al Barid”, is a smaller yet equally enchanting counterpart to Petra. Located a mere 15-minute drive from Petra’s Visitors Center, this archaeological site offers a quieter and less touristy experience. For a smooth visit, head there early in the morning before exploring Petra or the day after. Free shuttle buses are available from the Visitors Center
